U.S. News and World Report: Ohio State's Ag Engineering Department in Top 10

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State University's Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) tied for tenth in the nation for biological/agricultural engineering programs in the recent U.S. News & World Report's 2011 edition of America's Best Colleges.

FABE is Ohio State's top-ranked engineering department, and is part of both the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and the College of Engineering. The College of Engineering was ranked 26th overall and 17th among public universities; U.S. News does not rate agricultural colleges.

The department shares the 10th-place ranking with North Carolina State University-Raleigh and Pennsylvania State University.

"Obviously, this is a point of pride," said Sudhir Sastry, interim department chair and professor of food engineering. "But we have ranked highly ever since U.S. News started rating agricultural and biological engineering programs earlier this decade."

FABE offers undergraduate degrees in food engineering, agricultural engineering and biological engineering, and an ecological engineering degree is in the works, Sastry said. In addition, the department offers degrees in agricultural systems management and construction systems management, as well as master's and doctoral degrees in its graduate studies program. The department has about 600 undergraduates and about 50 graduate students, with another 15 joining the graduate studies program this fall.

"We have a very strong program," Sastry said. "Our faculty have a good reputation. Historically, we've been known for our soil and water engineering program, which has now transitioned into a biological/environmental program. By partnering with the Department of Food Science and Technology, our food engineering program is thriving. And we have many other strong programs, in areas including air quality, safety, pesticide application, composting, biomaterials and bioenergy. We have a good combination of faculty and specialties, and offer a wide variety of opportunities for students. And we have a good reputation for treating students well."

U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on peer and high school counselor assessment, retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni contributions.
