Master Gardeners Help with Raised Bed Gardens at Local Y.M.C.A.
One of the projects this year for the Champaign County Master Gardeners was to oversee a raised bed gardening project for the Y.M.C.A. daycare. Instead of building rasied beds out of wood, they were made with "Kiddy Pools" and one big tractor tire.
The children planted a pizza, herb, butterfly salad and vegetable garden in each of the pools and the big tractor tire.
Planted in the garden are plants you would need, for example for a pizza. The pizza garden has fennel, tomato, oregano, parsley, etc.
Moms and dads helped with getting the pools together and filling them with soil. They also assisted in putting a fence around the gardens to stop the bunnies from eating all of the young plants.
The next time you're walking on the track at the Y.M.C.A., look down from the northeast window and see how the garden grows!
